Mood Managers

Emotion Regulation Skills for Kids ages 8-11

Helping your child learn about emotions and how to manage them

  • Do you have a child between the ages of 8-11 years old who:

    • Has BIG feelings that are difficult to manage (like anger, frustration, irritation)?

    • Lashes out at others when they're upset?

    • Can be emotionally explosive, out of control, or over-the-top?

    • Might apologize after losing their cool?

    • Gets stuck in negative thinking?

As a parent, you'd like them to:

    • Become more self-aware and in control of their feelings

    • Learn strategies to manage their emotions better

    • Feel better about themselves

Mood Managers is an 8-week online group program designed to help your 8-11 year old child learn skills and strategies to manage their emotions more effectively.

Your child probably knows that they're not handling their feelings well, but they don't know what to do instead. You might feel like you're being held hostage by these patterns of reacting when triggered.

  • Isaac struggled with regulating feelings of frustration and overwhelm. We've seen Isaac put into practice some of the tools and ideas taught in this course quite often. He will take time away to regulate and then return when he is ready.

Common Questions

  • Check with your benefits provider that you have coverage for a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC).

If you want to use your health benefits, please request a receipt upon payment. This receipt will include a RCC registration # along with dates and duration of sessions to satisfy insurance requirements.

  • The 8-week program has weekly 1 hour Zoom sessions.

Kids are encouraged to share what they are learning with their parents and caregivers so you can support their skills practice each week.

  • After each session, you will receive an email summary of what your child learned that week. Each week your child is encouraged to track their moods and practice their new skills and strategies, so parent encouragement here goes a long way!

Parents and caregivers, you can be supported too, through the Chaos to Calm parent support program. Check it out!

The best results happen when the whole family is on board with learning and practicing effective ways of managing emotions. When you as a parent model how you manage your emotions, your child will be more willing to give it a try for themselves.

  • Great question!

First, be sure to set your child up for sessions in a quiet and private space. Print off the program workbook and put it in a binder or duotang for easy access. Have pencils and colouring supplies nearby.

Next, make sure your child has had a snack or feel free to provide something to sip or nibble on during these sessions, if that helps them. Fidgets are also welcome.

Finally, encourage your child to track their moods and reflect on which skills and strategies work best for them. By the end of the program, they will have a Mood Management Plan to share with you that you can support them to implement.
